To BUFFALO:Jared McCann Derek Forbort Jeremy Lauzon Sam Strange (P) NYR 5th 2021 To VANCOUVER:T.J. Oshie Matt Niskanen BUFFALO SALARY RETENTION: Sabres retain $2.5 million of Niskanen's 2020-21 salary, and $2 million on Oshie's 2020-21 and 2021-22 salaries. Sabres agree. This came together fairly quickly but I've had some extensive talks around the league on Oshie as some of you know. I think this arrangement was definitely the best fit for me now, and in the future. Super hard to move Oshie, but my roster is not set up to be where having him at his term would do me the most benefit. Now I'll have some versatility with McCann, who's still just 24 and has plenty of room to grow. Strange is a very intriguing prospect but is probably a couple years away still. Losing Niskanen is a sting for this year, but more than make up for it with the no-nonsense Forbort and Lauzon, who should be ready for pro duty (and possibly a top-4 spot) for me next season. Excellent talks Aaron.

Vancouver agrees.
We gave up a lot in McCann and Forbort and Lauzon. All are good, young players, who are going to get plenty more playing time in Buffalo than they would in the Canucks System. Getting Oshie and Niskanen are no brainers, although figuring out Niskanen's replacement next year is a quest only beginning. Salary retention was key in this deal for me, and it made it possible to improve a very strong team even more. Cheers to you Thomas, and the good chats!
